For the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases, endoscopy is the most powerful examination. Depending on which part of the digestive tract is to be examined, a distinction is made between the following endoscopies:
The endoscopic department at the BRIXSANA private clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art video endoscopes, which are a prerequisite for an extremely gentle and powerful examination. By means of endoscopy, we can assess the mucous membrane, take tissue samples (biopsies) and, if necessary, perform therapeutic interventions - polyp removal and hemostasis. We routinely perform a "gentle endoscopy" by administering a sedative, which makes the examinations usually painless. Anxiety and stressful situations are matter of the past.
After the examination, you can relax in a dedicated relaxation room. After a gentle endoscopy, you are not allowed to drive your car by yourself for 24 hours. Please remember to arrange a taxi for the way home or to ask somebody to give you a ride.
With this diagnostic procedure, it is possible to see exactly the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Tissue samples (biopsies) are routinely used to assess mucous membrane changes and to detect bacterial infection of the mucosa (Helicobacter pylori). The examination takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
We recommend to perform a gastroscopy with:
What you should consider before a gastroscopy: Please do not eat or drink 6 hours before the examination. Anticoagulants such as Coumadin and Sintrom or direct oral anticoagulation (= DOAC: Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis or Lixiana) or eventually also antiplatelet therapy should be temporarily stopped after consultation with your doctor.
With colonoscopy, the entire colon and the junction of the small intestine into the colon can be examined. The inside of the bowel is viewed with a small camera, which is inserted into the intestine with the endoscope. The camera transmits the images of the intestine directly onto a screen. With this method even small intestinal polyps and tumors can be detected.
A mucous membrane assessment is only possible if the intestine is clearly visible, which is why a gas is injected. Colorectal cancer screening is one of the most important tasks of colonoscopy. The slow development of colon cancer from precursors, such as the benign intestinal polyps, enables appropriate early detection. Polyps are therefore removed immediately. This therapeutic measure is painless. The examination takes about 20 to 30 minutes. After a recovery phase in the relaxation room, the findings are discussed with the doctor.
We recommend a colonoscopy for:
What you should consider before a colonoscopy: Before a colonoscopy, a thorough colon cleansing is necessary. The cleaner your bowel is, the better the assessability and the easier and faster it is to examine the bowel. Anticoagulants such as Coumadin and Sintrom or direct oral anticoagulation (= DOAC: Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis or Lixiana) or antiplatelet therapy should be paused after consultation with the your dooctor. After sedation, do not drive or operate machinery within the next 24 hours.
90 % of all cases of colorectal cancer could be prevented by a colonoscopy!
